Parallel evolution of sexual isolation in sticklebacks.
Mechanisms of speciation are not well understood, despite decades of study. Recent work has focused on how natural and sexual selection cause sexual isolation. Here, we investigate the roles of divergent natural and sexual selection in the evolution of sexual isolation between sympatric species of threespine sticklebacks. We test the importance of morphological and behavioral traits in conferri...
متن کاملcis-Regulatory Changes in Kit Ligand Expression and Parallel Evolution of Pigmentation in Sticklebacks and Humans
Dramatic pigmentation changes have evolved within most vertebrate groups, including fish and humans. Here we use genetic crosses in sticklebacks to investigate the parallel origin of pigmentation changes in natural populations. High-resolution mapping and expression experiments show that light gills and light ventrums map to a divergent regulatory allele of the Kit ligand (Kitlg) gene. The dive...
متن کاملWidespread parallel evolution in sticklebacks by repeated fixation of Ectodysplasin alleles.
Major phenotypic changes evolve in parallel in nature by molecular mechanisms that are largely unknown. Here, we use positional cloning methods to identify the major chromosome locus controlling armor plate patterning in wild threespine sticklebacks. Mapping, sequencing, and transgenic studies show that the Ectodysplasin (EDA) signaling pathway plays a key role in evolutionary change in natural...
متن کاملPopulation Structure and Artificial Evolution
We investigate the effect that population structure has upon the course of artificial evolution. We represent an arbitrary population structure by embedding a population of individuals in a graph. Each individual resides at a vertex of the graph and can only choose a mating partner from among its neighbors in the graph. Each individual mates with the selected partner and is replaced by the resu...
متن کاملParallel implementation of multi-population differential evolution
A coarse-grained parallelization of an adaptive differential evolution algorithm is described. The parallelization is based on the multi-population model, a random connection topology being used. The results obtained by the implementation of the proposed algorithm on a PC cluster show not only a speedup in execution time, but also a higher probability of convergence.
